Pre-Icebreaker Event for Students and Early Career Researchers

Is this your first time at a conference? Do you have little conference experience? Would you like to start the conference with a few contacts already? Do you want to have a fun time, play games, ask questions and get information on typical conference procedures? If so, the Pre-icebreaker Event is for you!

Sometimes, people with little conference experience feel as if almost everyone else at the icebreaker already knows people and wants to catch up with their favourite colleagues... and in part, this is true. But don't worry, we've all been there. At the Pre-icebreaker Event, we will talk about how to politely interrupt and join a group of experienced scientists and give you the opportunity to meet fellow young geoscientists prior to the conference. It's always good to know that you're not the only one who doesn't yet have a large geoscience network (!) and where to find your fellows.

So come and join us on Sunday, the 14th, at 17:00 in room 16-04. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Wir haben es geschafft! Ein neues Erdzeitalter ist angebrochen: Das Anthropozän. Die finstere Zeit des Holozäns, in der die Entwicklung unseres Planeten und unserer Zivilisation vom Klimawandel der Zwischeneiszeit bestimmt wurde, ist Vergangenheit. Klimawandel können wir nun selbst und damit liegt das Schicksal der Erde und der Menschheit in unseren eigenen Händen. Der Mensch triumphiert endgültig über die Natur. Ob das beiden wirklich guttut, ist allerdings die Frage.

Die Bilanz jedenfalls ist nicht ermutigend. In den knapp 300.000 Jahren, die der Homo sapiens die Erde bevölkert, hat er sie ziemlich abgewirtschaftet. Die Temperaturen steigen, die Meere versauern, der Planet ist plastikvermüllt und versteppt. Zugegebenermaßen hat diese Entwicklung erst in den letzten 200 Jahren so richtig an Fahrt aufgenommen, aber nun führt sie direkt in die Katastrophe und nur der Mensch kann sie noch stoppen. Der weiß zwar um seine Verantwortung, verharrt aber ungerührt im Weiter so und wird zum Wegbereiter des eigenen Untergangs.

Philipp Löhles absurde Komödie untersucht, wie es denn um die Spezies Mensch, auf die es jetzt ankommt so bestellt ist. Sie wirft einen Blick in die Zukunft, in der die die Menschheit das selbstständige Denken an ein digitales Endgerät delegiert hat und der Verblödung anheimfällt. Ein letzter Versuch, dem menschlichen Genpool durch Züchtung wieder Intelligenz einzuschreiben, scheitert an der gegenseitigen Abneigung des Paares und fehlendem Wissen über den Liebesakt. Ob die Fähigkeit ein Kochrezept zu lesen und die Fähigkeit, einfache Probleme durch Zuhilfenahme eines Werkzeugs zu lösen, wirklich ausgereicht hätte, den IQ der Spezies langfristig zu heben, sei dahingestellt.

Do you want to challenge yourself and your peers at the Geo4Göttingen conference? Do you want to show that you are the most knowledgeable in a very specific field, or just have a fun evening? Join us on Monday 15th at 7 pm for the early career pub-quiz.

The questions will cover most fields in geosciences and beyond! You can join the pub-quiz with your team or find your team at the event itself. Afterwards we will be having a relaxed evening at the bar. Location will be announced later.
